The over 60s lunch club at the Royal Highland Hotel in Inverness has not met since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

A Sunday lunch club which brings together people from the Inverness area and beyond is restarting after it had to close during the coronavirus pandemic.

The city’s Royal Highland Hotel, in partnership with Caring and Sharing, is opening its doors again to the monthly gatherings aimed at anyone aged over 60.

The first lunch will be on Sunday, starting at 1pm.

It will also include entertainment provided by The Accidentals.

The two-course lunches, which cost £5, will continue throughout the year on the third Sunday of every month.

The club celebrated its 10th anniversary in February 2020 – just before the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

It was set up after a report by Inverness Community Care Forum identified that people over 60 were at a higher risk of feelings of loneliness.

It also said that a Sunday was the worst day of the week for those feelings of isolation, as there was very little for people to do.

Liz Syred, who helps to organise the lunches, said they usually attract between 60 and 80 people.

The monthly event had been greatly missed over the past two years during the pandemic.

“I have tried to keep in contact with a lot of people and they keep saying that the lunches are a lifeline,” Mrs Syred said.

“Generally, everyone I have spoken to can’t wait to come back.

“They are so excited and say they are looking forward to seeing friends again.”

She has even had a couple of inquiries from Spain on behalf of close relatives living in the Inverness area.

“Anyone 60 and over is invited and you will be very welcome,” she said.

Anyone who wants to go along to this month’s lunch should book a place by tomorrow by calling Mrs Syred on 07925 145496.
