Hastie & Dyce Butchers and A & I Quality Butchers both impressed a panel of expert judges at the Scottish Craft Butchers product evaluation event in Stirling.

Hastie & Dyce, which is based in the Queensgate Arcade, won a gold award for its beef lorne sausage.

Culloden-based A & I Quality was successful on a number of fronts, picking up a total of four awards.

The business won silver prizes for its beef sliced sausage, hog roast sausage, venison sausage and beetroot and red onion sausage.

The evaluation attracted 276 entries from around the country, which were judged by a mixture of meat industry experts and sausage aficionados.

The products were sampled by the panel at the event at Forth Valley College in August, and the results were announced at the Scottish Craft Butchers regional meeting in Elgin last week.

The organisation’s president Paul Boyle said: “All butchers think we make the best products but it is not until you pitch them against others that you find out just how good they really are.

“To win awards in this evaluation is a great honour for the recipients because the standards are high and by highlighting the best available this serves as an important signpost for sausage lovers on the quest for the best.

Jill Bartlett, of event sponsor Dalesman Group, said: “Britons ate an extra 25 million of sausages over the past year with speciality sausages undoubtedly a key driver in the revival of the great British banger. Families are seeking artisan gourmet ingredients as well as healthier options including low fat and leaner proteins from their local craft butchers.”
