A student jocularly threatened to slash the tyres of a fellow student's car if he did not get a lift to his accommodation.

But Inverness Sheriff Court heard that 18-year-old Ruaraidh MacLeod, of Braighe Road, Point on the Isle of Lewis, made good his threat after drinking later that night.

Defence solicitor Pauline Chapman told Sheriff Sara Matheson that her client was annoyed that he was dropped off before his final destination and told by the driver: "Enjoy your walk."

The court was told that MacLeod had a Stanley knife with him earlier in the day which he needed for his plumbing course and used it to puncture one tyre of the car in Mason Road, Inverness on April 28, 2022.

Mrs Chapman said: "The comment in the car was jocular and laughed off. But he was annoyed and he had been drinking later."

Sheriff Matheson told MacLeod: "This is odd behaviour. You have a bright future ahead of you and you are going to have to make sure you stay out of trouble."

She deferred sentence until April 4 next year for his good behaviour and ordered him to pay for the damaged tyre.
