A student has been sworn in as a First Sea Lord Cadet for 2020 at an investiture on HMS Victory in Portsmouth.

Emma King (16) was chosen to represent the northern area and will act as an ambassador to raise the profile of Sea Cadets, while gaining insight into the higher levels of the Royal Navy and attending formal parades, ship visits, royal occasions, opening ceremonies, presentations, awards and receptions.

Emma, who joined Sea Cadets aged 10, said she never thought it would have such a big impact on her life and has developed new skills, becoming a rowing coxswain and gaining a powerboating qualification.

She hopes to go to university and study psychology to follow a career supporting people with mental health issues.

Emma’s mother, Victoria, spoke of her pride in Emma.

“As an extremely thoughtful and empathetic individual, she has encountered many personal challenges along the way, but her personal determination and strength has taken her through – and continues to,” she said.

The First Sea Lord, Admiral Tony Radakin, who joined the cadets for their investiture said they should be proud of their achievements.

“We, the Royal Navy, are the beneficiaries of what Sea Cadets do,” he said.

“What they create in and beyond their units is fantastic for the nation, their enthusiasm and commitment is phenomenal.”
