A Strictly Inverness contestant hosted a fundraiser that was the ‘first-event-of-its-kind’ on Saturday.

Shireen Fyffe (30) organised for people to enjoy a yoga session in Inverness Town House, where people were able to stretch their bodies and soothe their minds.

Raising £610 for the Highland Hospice and Inverness Ice Centre, the yoga was led by local practitioner, Christie Wood who ushered the packed-out room into pretzel-shaped forms.

Shireen Fyffe, from Inverness, is competing in the annual charity event in memory of her mum Joan Mackay, who was cared for by the hospice in 2022 and spent the last five months of her life, with her husband Jack, there.

Pennie Latin-Stuart, the creator and host of the podcast LUMP, read out one of the show’s episodes at the event, which recounts and tells the story of her own cancer journey, from the highs to the lows. Pennie’s podcast has provided a lot of support to Shireen, and LUMP alongside the The Head Gardener are Shireen’s corporate sponsors for the Strictly Inverness competition.

Shireen said: “Listening to LUMP helped me to understand what thoughts, feelings and worries my mum would have been going through at the different stages of her diagnosis.

“The podcast has helped me to see things from a different point of view and feel closer to my mum by having an insight into the parts that she was protecting me from at the time.

“I love to hear Pennie’s weekly updates where she is honest, raw, sweary and funny too! Whether you are going through cancer or supporting family or friends through their cancer journey, you will be able to reflect, learn and grow listening to this podcast.”

Shireen’s fundraising total is now over £6000 for Highland Hospice and Inverness Ice Centre and she will take to the dancefloor in May.

She added: “It was such a lovely event and a perfect way to round off fundraising, having a lovely relaxing morning. It was so kind of Christie to organise such a lovely event and I’m so grateful to Pennie for coming along to share words from my favourite episode of the LUMP podcast.

“I’m now going to spend the remaining weeks of Strictly focusing on the dancing! I’m so excited for the last couple of weeks before the main event.”
