Wind farm workers who became stranded in snow in their vehicle on a road near the Stronelairg Windfarm connection site due to heavy snow were airlifted to safety last night.

The Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team (CMRT) was involved in the rescue.

A spokeswoman for the construction project being delivered by SSEN and contractors Siemens-BAM said: “We can confirm that, due to extremely heavy snowfall, access roads to and from the Stronelairg connection site were currently closed and all works were suspended.

“Due to continued challenging conditions, three team members were located in a stationary vehicle between a satellite building and the main accommodation block. These individuals were safe, their location was known and lines of communication were open.

“In line with our emergency plan, we took all possible steps to ensure the safety and welfare of these individuals including, as a precaution, enlisting the support of Cairngorm Mountain Rescue.

"We can confirm the men were safely airlifted at 5.30pm yesterday evening and are all safe and well."

Cairngorm Mountain Rescue tweeted: "Three stranded workers airlifted by Rescue 951 and transferred to Raigmore Hospital.

"CMRT thanks as ever to 951 for superb service."
