Storm Gerrit gales of 105mph slam Cairngorm ski resort
Cairngorm Mountain's snow gates are well and truly closed as gales being brought in by Storm Gerrit top more than 100mph.
The ski resort, which opened on Friday for the new snowsports season, has been reporting winds of 105mph today at the summit of Cairn Gorm just above the slopes.
They are being brought in from the south east by the storm but there is some good news for skiers and snowboarders.
Storm Gerrit is also bringing with it blizzards and lots of heavy snow which is falling to 800 metres meaning there is a badly needed boost to the slopes after a recent mild spell.
The storm force winds seem to have affected the webcams at the resort with the live feeds of the conditions not appearing to be working.
However, the wind speeds are still a long way off being record-breaking for the UK.
The strongest ever wind gust was 150.3 knots (173 mph) recorded at Cairn Gorm Summit on 20 March 1986.
Meanwhile, today's temperature is reported to be -3C at the ski resort but will be much colder when the high wind chill factor is taken into account.
The ski access road is closed.
A Cairngorm Mountain resort spokesperson said earlier today: "Our lower learners area is in very good condition with fresh snow mixed in with our SnowFactory snow
"There is a covering of fresh snow across other areas of the mountain."
