RECENT storms have played havoc in Tomnahurich Cemetery in Inverness with falling trees damaging headstones.

Now there is concern over who will foot the bill for repairs to fallen headstones.

The Inverness Courier was contacted by a member of the public who said she had been told by a council employee that some headstones would "probably" only be repaired by Highland Council if a family member of the interred "complained" to the council.

More damage.
More damage.

Today in response to being asked about this, a council spokeswoman said: "There has been quite a number of damaged trees and headstones owing to the last severe gale we had.

"Our staff are working their way through the area and have removed trees and repaired headstones that were a health and safety concern.

"Once we have cleared the area we will be in a position to assess the damage and plan a way forward.

"Only then will we be able to make decisions on any other damaged headstones.”

The woman, who took these photographs added: "There are a lot more damaged headstones than the ones I photographed."

Yet another area of damage.
Yet another area of damage.
