The capital investment group at the Scottish Government has approved the initial agreement for the Elective Care Centre at Inverness Campus, which was submitted by NHS Highland in May.

It means NHS Highland can now submit an outline business case for the project.

The centre will aim to offer a best-in-class delivery of knee, hip and cataract surgery as well as the full range of ophthalmology outpatient services.

It will have 30 beds, three theatres as well as day case and outpatient facilities with the capacity to carry out 1800 hip and knee procedures, 4200 cataracts and 45,000 outpatient attendances each year and it is hoped the centre will open in 2021.

NHS Highland chief executive Elaine Mead said: “The proposed facility will also help in meeting the predicted rising demand for a range of procedures, providing us with extra capacity to ensure we are reducing waiting times and offering improved services and facilities.

“It will also offer staff development opportunities, improve their working environment as well as assisting in our recruitment and retention.

“Our aim is to push the services within this facility to world-class levels of performance. Work has begun in earnest on the outline business case which, once completed, will be submitted for approval by the board before going to the Scottish Government.”
