Step and Stretch, a workout class, was created by qualified personal trainer Melanie Hossack, who is passionate about all things fitness.

The class is designed to give a catchy but effective workout to some upbeat tunes and involves a cool down.

Stiff from my previous workout, I headed along to Charleston Community Complex on Wednesday night, not sure what to expect.

Yet, the well attended class soon started, and we did not stop!

For 30 minutes, Melanie guided us through a stepping workout to some upbeat tunes that kept us going.

Once my hands and feet started working in sync and I no longer looked like a deer in headlights, I realised I was on to a winner with the catchy routine.

The low impact but intense class is perfect for people struggling to get moving or who want a little bit more cardio in their week.

I started the night on just over 5000 steps, and ended on 9500 which was perfect for me as I have been struggling to get my steps in as an office worker, so this is a great option.

To my surprise, the final song rolled around and half an hour had gone already. But we were not done.

Now comes the next part - 30 minutes of relaxing and treating your body to a good stretch.

With each slow and steady movement, I felt my body release.

I struggle to find time to stretch, so this was a great opportunity to combine working out and treating my body to a stretch afterwards.

The welcoming environment Melanie has created is a testament to her hard work.

She runs other classes including pilates and outdoor bootcamps, but also has just launched an adapted version of step and stretch for adults with additional needs.

These classes are a more toned down version that are easier to pick up on.

One thing is clear however, she hopes that all her classes make people feel comfortable.

"Especially after covid, I think health and fitness is really important," she said.

"There’s women of all ages shapes and sizes and they're made to feel comfortable. It's just to encouraging people to get fitter but you don't have to join a gym. It’s fun and good music, with a nice half hour chill out at the end."

The routine changes every eight weeks with new music to accompany it.

If you are interested in joining, Step and Stretch takes place on Wednesday at Charleston Community Complex at 6pm, Thursday at Drakies at 10am, Friday at Merkinch Community Centre at 9:30 and Friday at Balloch at 6pm.
