Hollywood A-lister Karen Gillan has teamed up with TFX Performing Arts Academy and the Inverness Courier to give four young people a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of top-class singing, dancing and acting tuition for free.

The Avengers, Jumanji and Dr Who star is a driving force behind the initiative where a quartet – aged between seven and 18 – will get access to a three-hour musical theatre performance class every Saturday for a year at Old High Hall.

The places are fully funded including uniforms with two places going to pupils who would otherwise be unable to afford the classes and two for those who show outstanding talent and promise.

Ms Gillan, who is originally from Inverness and is a previous pupil at the TFX academy, said: “I have been fortunate enough to have a career in the performing arts.

“This is largely due to my training at TFX. Therefore I want to invest in the new generation of young performers in the Highlands.

“It wasn’t always easy for my family to afford to send me to classes growing up. Therefore I want to extend two places at TFX to young performers from lower income families, like I was.

“I hope this opportunity will be the beginning of something really exciting for the successful applicants.”

Ms Gillan will also be judging the entries.

Applicants can apply to both scholarships, those applying for a place from a low-income family, are asked to make this known in the application form.

TFX principal Sally Robertson said: “When I started this school over 20 years ago I had a dream. I fought for that dream and here we are.

“When Karen joined TFX she had a dream and look at where she is now.

“If you have a dream this could be your opportunity – go for it!”

To enter the competition you must visit the TFX website at www.tfxperform.com to download an application form, and entrants must include an audition video showing off a skill or skills. It does not have to be professionally filmed – a phone recording is fine.

TFX assistant principal Kayleigh Redford said: “Inverness and the Highlands is full of young talent – but often in the performing arts industry that isn’t enough.
