The Old High Church in Inverness is to host a Songs of Praise service this Sunday, September 19, at 3pm.

The historic building, currently under threat of closure, is hosting the service with the support of Inverness East Church and the Free North Church.

The service will include the reading of traditional psalms and more modern hymns, a Gospel reading and a short prayer.

It is scheduled to last 45 minutes and is open to all, whether churchgoers or not, subject to a Covid-restricting limit of 200.

The event has been organised by the Old High St Stephen’s congregation member Sheila MacLeod and Deacon Dot Getliffe, who has led worship since the departure of previous minister the Rev Peter Nimmo last year.

The six psalms and hymns will be introduced briefly by those who selected them, with the special reasons for their choices.

Among those introducing is Major the Rev Geoff Berry, padre to the Black Watch at Fort George.

Retired GP Dr Malcolm Macrae, an enthusiastic piper, will play those attending in to the tune of Sands of Kuwait, written by Gordon MacKenzie for his colleagues in the Queen's Own Highlanders who were killed in the first Gulf War.

The service will end with the pipe tune Highland Cathedral.
