Highland Council has revealed that some of the red mites found in an Inverness secondary school were taken from the premises.

It emerged last Thursday that the pests had been discovered at Charleston Academy.

Headteacher Michael Aitchison wrote to parents and carers of the 777-pupil school to tell them the school was not going to reopen until after the summer holiday.

It means scheduled lessons this week were switched to online classes.

It remains unclear whether the red mites are blood-sucking ectoparasites that are linked to poultry or red spider mites which feed on plants.

A council spokeswoman said: "We are aware of a communication to parents from the school which was issued on Friday. However, we would like to provide some further clarification and reassurance.

"We are only aware of two incidents from last week of mites being transported into the home. Environmental health advice is being sought and appropriate action will be taken over the summer period to eradicate the pests."

It is unclear whether the mites were taken home by pupils, staff or visitors.
