SNP politicians across the Highlands have united in calling on the Scottish government to improve rail services linking Inverness with London.

It comes as The Inverness Courier’s Save Our Trains campaign to safeguard the Highland Chieftain and the Caledonian Sleeper services between the UK and Highland capitals gathers pace.

With both services facing an uncertain future under a Scottish government review of rail services, the issue was raised yesterday in the Scottish Parliament by Highlands and Islands SNP MSP John Finnie.

Amid the furore which has arisen about the consultation, Mr Finnie sought reassurances from transport minister Keith Brown, who maintained the consultation is an opportunity to propose rail service enhancements.

"I believe the time has come to replace the 40-year-old sleeper rolling stock and will respond to the consultation accordingly and encourage others to share their views too," Mr Finnie said.

His SNP colleagues — Rob Gibson (Caithness, Sutherland and Ross), Dave Thomson (Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch), Jean Urquhart and Mike Mackenzie (Highlands and Islands) — plus the entire Highland Council SNP Group will submit a proposal to improve and build upon the existing services.
