Highland SNP MSP Emma Roddick has also voiced some concerns about the impact of green freeports, not just for workers rights but also for other parts of the Highlands.
Noting that freeports in Scotland are a largely untested idea she says she fears that some communities in the north could “have their potential damaged” if the economic focus became over centralised around the Cromarty and Moray Firths.
She said: “It remains to be seen what the impact of these ports will be, but I share fears that they could mean most communities, including those I represent, not only miss out on much-needed investment, but actually have their potential damaged by the emergence of designated freeports elsewhere.
“While the Scottish Greenport model promises stronger workers’ rights than the English Freeports, I am clear that Highland communities should not be left worse-off for pursual of this policy.
“World-leading work is going on at Port of Cromarty Firth, work that will support our journey to Net Zero as well as provide valuable local opportunities for people in the region, and it is vital that the commitments the Scottish Government has secured to ensure fair work actually translates to a good experience for those working in the area.”
