SNOW warnings for Inverness, the Black Isle and wider Highlands area have been upgraded to amber alert.

Heavy snow showers have been falling across the area since a yellow alert came into force this morning. It will remain in place overnight and right through Thursday.

But Met Office weather forecasters have now also issued an amber warning for the period between 5pm this evening and 11am on Thursday.

"Snow showers will become widespread and heavier across Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England during Wednesday evening and will continue through the night into Thursday morning," warned a Met Office spokesman.

"Snow amounts will be very variable but over 5cm will accumulate at lower levels in places with over 15cm on high ground.

"Strong and gusty winds will lead to drifting and blizzard conditions at times, especially over higher routes.

"The public should be prepared for travel disruption and hazardous driving conditions," they added.
