A once-in-a-lifetime experience became a fundraiser for one of the region’s leading charities when a man decided to put a Christmas present to good use.

James Ross (49) received the gift of skydiving from his children, in the form of a voucher for the experience.

Generous James, from Alness, was determined it should not just be all about a fun day out for himself though and decided to appeal for sponsorship to benefit Inverness-based Highland Hospice ahead of making the jump.

Bad weather put paid to his first two attempts to make the leap with Skydive St Andrews, but on Saturday, September 18, he was finally good to go.

Enjoying spectacular, if brief, views of large parts of Fife, Dundee and Edinburgh on his 165-mile-an-hour descent he also raised more than £500 for the charity.

Explaining how the hospice had cared for his mum, Christine Ross, before she passed away 11 years ago, he said: “The staff couldn’t have done more for us.

“I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

Hospice fundraiser Emma Nicol said: “We are so grateful to James for raising funds through his skydive in memory of his mum.

“The funds he has raised will really help those who we care for across the whole of the Highland community.”
