An Inverness singer-songwriter is earning rave reviews after penning a song about the Highland capital.

A video of Peter MacPherson (20) singing his song It’s Inverness has gone viral on social media, racking up 40,000 views in 16 hours.

The Aberdeen University music student says he has been taken aback by the response.

"It’s been a bit crazy," he said.

"I wasn’t expecting the song to get anything like the reception it’s had.

"I went along to an open mic night with one of my friends the day I wrote the song and decided to give it a go. I didn’t realise she was filming!

"I was actually on the golf course when she sent it to me. I decided to post it online and by the time I got home it had over a thousand views.

"Normally when I put something online it only gets a couple of hundred views but this one has had about 40,000 already!"

The song includes references and jokes about the city – from local characters and pubs to the number of Tesco stores.

Mr MacPherson, from Culduthel, says people can relate and believes that is why it has proved so popular.

"The inspiration for the song was really just coming home for the summer," he said.

"I’ve spent a lot of time in the heart of the city since I’ve been back and it’s made me reminisce a fair bit.

"I’ve seen the town develop so much in the last few years.

"It’s only really a couple of lines but it’s about things which are really ingrained in Inverness culture.

"I feel it’s something that people have listened to and have felt they can relate to."

Mr MacPherson admitted that he has only recently begun songwriting – but revealed he has already been invited to give talks in local schools.

"I’ve only started songwriting very recently," he said.

"I’m involved in a few things at uni which keep me very busy but I wrote a song for a friend’s wedding and another one at Christmas.

"I’m really starting to get the bug for it now.

"I’ve also had a phone call from a teacher at Drummond Primary School. They want me to go in and do a bit of work with the kids.

"I don’t have much expertise but I am really looking forward to going in and sharing my love for music with them."
