RAIL passengers using the Highland mainline between Inverness and Edinburgh have been warned to expect possible disruption after a signalling fault impacted journeys across the Forth Bridge.

The fault, which affects signals between Dalmeny and North Queensferry is "causing delays to all northbound services over the Forth Bridge," ScotRail has confirmed.

A spokesman for the rail franchise added: "Until the problem is fixed, we're only able to run three northbound trains per hour over the Forth Bridge.

"These will depart Edinburgh at xx08 (for Glenrothes), xx30 (for Aberdeen) and xx33 (for Perth/Inverness)."

Network Rail Scotland engineers were reported to have arrived at the problem spot shortly before 1.30pm.

A spokesman for the organisation said: "We've been working at the Forth Bridge where a signalling system fault occurred earlier, limiting the number of trains through the area. Sorry if you've been affected."

ScotRail said the disruption is expected to last until around 3pm.
