Wind power does not just create green, carbon-free energy, it also creates jobs.

In Scotland there are over 9000 businesses involved in the wind energy supply chain, among them world-leading firms who are setting a standard for others around the globe to follow.

These companies might be attracting international attention, but they will also have the opportunity for some local recognition at the Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Awards – part of Highland and Islands Renewable Energy Day on Thursday, June 23, together with the Scottish Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Conference (SHREC).

The award for the best supplier to the offshore renewables sector – one of two award categories sponsored by SSE Renewables, which has the largest offshore wind development pipeline in the UK and Ireland – will provide a platform showcasing the contribution local suppliers are making towards the transition to a carbon neutral future.

Brian McFarlane, SSE Renewables’ offshore development head of projects, commented: “SSE Renewables is building more offshore wind than any other company in the world and we do so with a valued supply chain.

“Offshore wind has an important role to play to achieve Scotland’s net zero ambitions and this award recognises the diversity of offshore suppliers in the Highlands and Islands and the contribution they make to the renewables sector as we move towards a more sustainable future.”

Marine operators supporting or supplying any form of offshore renewables, including wind, wave, tidal or cable based projects, are encouraged to put forward entries.

This award covers the full range of services and supplies provided to the marine sector, from vessel related services to installation, and from surveying to diving.

Candidates should supply evidence from the last two years to show why they should be considered for the award, and demonstrate how they have made a significant contribution to the projects they support.

To learn more and see the guidelines for this and the other categories in this year’s awards, go to www.hnmedia.co.uk/renewable-energy-day, where you can also find out how to attend and learn about sponsorship opportunities.

The deadline for entries is Friday, May 20.

Both the Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Awards and SHREC, which are being produced in partnership between north media group and newspaper publisher Highland News & Media (HNM) and top Scottish law firm Harper Macleod, will continue to be held in an online format, making them accessible no matter where its audience logs in from.

Ahead of the awards, which begin at 6.30pm and will once again be compered by HNM columnist, broadcaster and life coach Nicky Marr, the 11th SHREC conference will provide a snapshot of what is happening in the thriving Highlands and Islands renewable energy sector and look ahead at the new opportunities in store.

Bringing together industry experts and decision makers from both the worlds of politics and business, SHREC will run from noon to approximately 3.40pm. Look out for updates on the participants and agenda at https://events.harpermacleod.co.uk/
