RECKLESS motorists were caught doing speeds of up to 115mph during a week-long police crackdown across the Highlands.

Officers caught drivers going up to 45mph above the legal limit on the A9, more than 30mph above the limit on the A96, and over 20mph above the 30mph limit for built-up areas.

In total, 65 separate speeding offences were recorded during the single week of the campaign.

And police in the region have now spoken of their "extreme disappointment" at the scale of the figures and the speeds of those flouting the law.

Sergeant Chris Donaldson of the Highland and Islands Road Policing Unit said: “The figures recorded during the week-long period of enforcement are disappointing, and I would continue to appeal to road users to consider the safety of not only themselves but others who use the road network.

Eric Dunion, Unit Manager of Police Scotland’s North Safety Camera Unit, said: “Given the current focus on the A9, we are extremely disappointed to have recorded these speeds in the campaign. Whilst the majority of drivers are aware of and adhere to the speed limits in place, these figures suggest that there are still motorists who are not complying, putting themselves and other motorists at risk, which is not acceptable.”

During the campaign, drivers were detected travelling at 115mph, 99mph and 97mph within a 70mph limit on the A9 at Alvie and Kincraig, respectively. 99mph within a 70mph limit on the A9 at Daviot. 92mph in a 60mph limit on the A96 near Nairn, 72mph within the 50mph on the A9 at Tain, and within the 30mph limit in Golspie, vehicles were detected at 51mph and 49mph.
