An Inverness father has vowed to stop drinking so he can be a role model for his child, a sheriff was told.

Sean Pierce appeared before Sheriff Gary Aitken at Inverness Sheriff Court and admitted threatening or abusive behaviour towards his partner on June 16, 2023.

The court heard the 35-year-old was drinking in the garden when a neighbour heard the couple bickering, fiscal depute Victoria Silver told the court.

"They went indoors, there was further arguing, getting louder and louder with banging as if a fight was going on and shouting from the two of them," she said.

"At 12.45am he was still shouting and swearing at his partner and the police were called. But he had left only for the neighbour to hear further shouting.

"She went into the stairwell and saw them struggling. The partner then went to the neighbour's house, was let in and the door locked.

"Police attended again and he asked why they had been called?"

Defending, Rory Gowans told the sheriff: "He has been seeking help and has been free of alcohol for the last four months.

"He works long hours and with the benefit of sobriety, he knows why the police were there. He is not getting any younger and knows he has a lot to lose if he carries on drinking.

"He is already doing things off his own back to stop drinking. He had a difficult upbringing and wants to be a good father."

Placing Pierce under a year's social work supervision with a condition of alcohol treatment, Sheriff Aitken told him: "Alcohol is clearly a difficulty for you and you appear to be doing something about it.

"Otherwise you will have a bleak future."
