SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE: A82 shut near Invermoriston and the Kyle-Inverness rail line is closed

The busy A82 is at a standstill due to a fallen tree between Invermoriston and Fort Augustus as the Highlands continues to be lashed with persistent heavy rain.

BEAR Scotland are on their way to the scene but motorists are warned traffic is at a standstill.

Elsewhere flooding at Achnasheen between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh meant Network Rail had to close the line.

Water is running under the track so for engineers to inspect it the line has been closed effectively cancelling all train services between Inverness and the west coast until further notice.

Trains

All Scotrail services between Inverness and Perth have been cancelled, no alternative forms of transport are available. The Kyle of Lochalsh line to and from Inverness is now closed.

Services on the Far North Line – between Thurso/Wick and Inverness – are still running. Scotrail's journey checker should have the latest information – you can find it by clicking here.

LNER service that runs between the Highlands and London has also been cancelled – in fact the operator will not be running any services north of Newcastle.

Buses and private vehicles

Both Megabus and Citylink are still running services and the A9 is open but Traffic Scotland are advising motorists to take extra care.

If you are thinking about driving from the Highlands south or vice versa then you will travel through the two weather warnings but the more severe amber warning starts north of Aviemore and ends south east of Perth or south of Glasgow.

BEAR Scotland warns that surface water is beginning to gather on the A9 south of Tain.
