Inverness-Kyle of Lochalsh rail services have been affected by a landslide at Garve.

A LANDSLIDE at Garve is causing "severe disruption" to the Inverness-Kyle of Lochalsh rail line, and blocked the A835 Inverness to Ullapool road following torrential rain.

Police said the landslide occurred 100 metres north of the Garve Hotel, but added that a single lane of the road had now re-opened to traffic (as of 8.49am). Delays were expected.

Meanwhile, Scotrail has advised passengers planning to use the railway not to travel on the Inverness-Kyle route following the overnight landslip.

A spokesman for Scotrail said: "Due to a landslip at Garve train services between Inverness and Kyle Of Lochalsh may be cancelled.

"An estimate for the resumption of normal services will be provided as soon as the problem has been fully assessed.

"Passengers are advised not to travel on this route at present due to a landslip closing the line at Garve, we are unable to operate road tranport as the road is also affected."

A spokesman for Traffic Scotland added: "Road users are advised that the A835 is blocked at Garve westbound and eastbound due to a landslide, motorists are advised to use an alternate route."

The Met Office, meanwhile, has warned motorists and homeowners that an amber warning for torrential rain will remain in place until midday today.

A spokesman said: "A frontal system will remain relatively slow-moving across western and northwestern parts of Scotland, finally clearing southeastwards during the first half of Tuesday.

"Until then, heavy persistent rainfall is likely to continue across much of the warning area, with peak intensities likely late Monday and early on Tuesday. Residual impacts may occur for some time after the clearance of the rainfall.

"The public should be aware that disruption is likely due to flooding."

Police Scotland has urged motorists to take extra care on all local roads because of standing water.

"Motorists are being advised to allow extra time when planning their journey," said a spokesman.
