AN Inverness man who decided to drive “round the corner” to a local shop refused to give police a breath test when he was interviewed by police.

But James Stewart (26), of Longman Caravan Site, volunteered that he was a disqualified driver.

At Inverness Sheriff Court, Stewart admitted driving while disqualified and without insurance and failing to provide breath samples on February 25.

He had sentence deferred until May 19 for a restriction of liberty assessment.

Defence solicitor Graham Mann told Sheriff Robert Frazer that there was someone else there who was entitled to drive but had been drinking.

“The distance travelled was only a short one and why the police were called had nothing to do with him,” Mr Mann said.

“Clearly there was a lack of co-operation which flies in the face of him voluntarily saying he was a disqualified driver.”

Sheriff Frazer warned Stewart that he should not read anything into the decision to defer sentence.
