THE Scottish SPCA wants local animal lovers to take part in the Loch Ness Marathon Festival and boost funds which are used to save abused, abandoned and injured pets.

The festival has a series of events for runners, including children, on Sunday, September 24 and officials at the animal welfare charity have appealed to the public to run for the cause.

The events are: a marathon, 10k, 5k and a children’s race.

Elaine Floyd, manager of the charity’s Highlands and Islands animal rescue and re-homing centre in Inverness, said, “The Loch Ness Marathon Festival is a fantastic way for locals to help animals in the area.

“Last year our centre found loving new homes for over 590 pets and we’ve already re-homed nearly 250 animals this year.

“There’s also a ‘Wee Nessie Race’ for children under five-years-old, so it’s a great opportunity for kind-hearted youngsters to make a difference in their community.

“As we don’t receive any government or lottery funding, we really do rely on people taking part in fund-raising events like this to continue our work.

“And anyone who participates in the marathon will be helping save lives.”
