Scottish Bakers ambassador Mich Turner MBE announces they are back in Inverness to “showcase the resilience and creativity in Scotland's bakery sector.”

“Let’s show them how much we appreciate their hard work and skill. I am asking everyone who shops in their local bakery, not just here in Inverness but all across Scotland to do one simple thing: vote for your favourite bakery in the Scottish Baker of the Year Awards 2023/24.

“If you haven’t shopped in your local bakers for a while, perhaps now is the time to revisit them and try some of their fantastic fresh bakes. Each vote helps recognise the hard work and skill of your favourite local bakery and counts towards the Customer Choice Awards."

To mark the start of the competition, on the 8th February at 10AM, eight UHI Inverness students will go head-to-head to create “Scotland on a cake” in just 45 minutes. Scottish Bakers ambassador and Little Venice Cake Company founder Mich Turner MBE will be on hand to ensure fair play and to assess the contestants’ efforts, determining if they look good enough to eat.

The students will be able to call upon advice on the day from the current Scottish Baker of the Year, Paddy Murphy from The Three Little Bakers, based in Inverness, and from Scottish Bakers President and Director of McGhees Bakery Ian McGhee, who is helping the association to shape the future direction of the sector in the coming two years.

The event marks the opening of customer voting for the Scottish Baker of the Year award. Shoppers simply need to vote for their favourite bakery and from these they will identify a “Customer Choice” winner in each of the four business categories; Craft Baker, Retail Craft Baker, Wholesale Baker and Bakery Cafe.

The winners will be announced at a glittering Gala dinner at the Glasgow Hilton on Saturday 6th May 2023.

Voting begins on 8th February and runs until the 5th April. QR codes and voting forms are available at all participating bakeries or shoppers can vote online at Scottish Bakers.
