RAIL passengers on the Far North Line were facing disruption this morning after services were terminated mid journey.

The 6.19am Wick to Inverness train terminated at Lairg and the 7am Inverness to Wick service was suspended at Tain due to "a safety inspection of the track".

There was no immediate information as to the reason for the safety inspection or the precise location the inspection was being carried out between Lairg and Tain.

ScotRail said that an additional train was put on between Lairg and Wick, which left the Sutherland station at 8.53am, in order to minimise disruption for passengers at the northern end of the route. It is due to arrive in Wick at 11.31am calling at all stations in between.

It was not immediately clear if the safety inspection was likely to affect later trains on the timetable.

Network Rail Scotland has been approached for details.
