Schools closed following severe gales

NUMEROUS local schools have been closed as a result of this morning's severe gales.

Highland Council has been forced to close around 90 schools in total as a result of the bad weather and widespread power cuts, which left almost 70,000 homes without power.

Locally, primary schools in Ardersier, Avoch, Cawdor, Cromarty, Culbokie, Foyers and Strathdearn are all closed.

Charleston Academy, Glen Urquhart High School and the Drummond School are also shut.

Smithton Primary and Balloch Primary, meanwhile, are expected to open today, but an hour later than normal.
