There's nothing quite like a tasty half-time pie or sausage roll for that quintessential football matchday experience.

Passionate debates rage between fans as to which ground serves the best of the best, and whose offerings are flirting with the relegation zone.

And now Caley Jags' matchday food has found itself thrust into the debate after the hugely popular Footy Scran social media account – which is followed by more than 520,000 people on Twitter and posts snaps of fans' culinary experiences – shared an image of a sausage roll that it's claimed was served at the Caledonian Stadium... and let's just say the response was swift, with fans flaming the image almost as much as the roll appears to have been.

One wry poster asked: "Who supplied it, the local crematorium?"

George Kerr took his inspiration from a certain famous headline: "Super Caley Go Ballistic Sausage Rolls Atrocious."

Another threw in a little Middle Earth flair for good measure...

Was it cast into the fires of Mount Doom?

Someone call the police, there's been a Mordor! I wonder what Merry and Pippin would think if this was served at Second Breakfast?

While another simply posted...

Quite.

However, some – with tongues firmly in cheek – leapt to the defence of the sausage roll.

"Yes it’s a little over cooked, but the price in comparison to any stadium in the USA makes it worth it," wrote Owen Sullivan before adding a crying laughing emoji.

And Gabrielle Willets was not alone in questioning whether the roll was genuine: "Is this the charcoal they cook them on? They can't seriously sell them like that and why would anyone buy them in that state?"

Jack Waddington added: "Defo put a pyro on it. No chance are the Caley catering team selling rocks lmao."

And another was quick to point out that the same day's steak pie had been very moreish.

But what was the verdict on the sausage roll in the all-important Footy Scran Twitter poll?

Well, it wasn't looking good for the sausage roll – polling 87.5 per cent "no scran" after almost 25,000 votes had been cast.

There were still eight hours remaining on the poll at the time of writing.

A spokesman for Caley Thistle said the club would not be issuing any comment on this.
