An ultra marathon that saw a record turnout take on the challenge of completing a loop of Loch Ness last year is set to return this spring.

Ultra X Scotland is expected to attract another cohort of keen runners looking to complete a 100km-plus course around the loch in two stages.

The weekend event, which takes place on May 4-5, follows a course involving the Great Glen Way and South Loch Ness Trail.

The full 110km race is done over two days and includes 3768 metres of ascent, while a separate 50km event starts from Fort Augustus on the Sunday and covers 1381 metres climbing.

In 2023, the third year of the event, 450 competitors took part representing more than 30 nationalities.

But organisers are keen for local runners to get involved in the event, too, with entries now open at https://ultra-x.co/ultra-x-scotland/

They say the course is renowned for its “stunning scenery and trails” focused on the Great Glen and Loch Ness.

Both races are run under a Scottish Athletics permit, and the finish area at Dores will be busy with local vendors selling food and drink, along with music and commentary, helping to create a celebratory atmosphere.
