Iain McGilvray was determined to do his bit for charity even after this year's London Marathon was cancelled.

A man who completed the equivalent of the postponed London Marathon in his garden has raised almost six times his original fundraising target for Highland Hospice.

Iain McGilvray, managing director of crane hire firm Weldex, managed to raise almost £27,000 for the Inverness-based charity.

He had been due to take part in what would have been his fifth and final London Marathon on Sunday.

However, like many other sporting events and mass gatherings, it was postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown.

Mr McGilvray christened the replacement event The Great Balmore of Leys Marathon 2020 and, as the only entrant, he was pleased to have been the inaugural winner.

His wife Morag said the amount so far raised was impressive – as their original target had been £5000.

She added: "Iain is delighted to have won a marathon!

"He has raised hundreds of thousands for charities by doing marathons, cycling events and rowing events.

"Highland Hospice has always been a charity close to the family’s heart."
