A SHERIFF decided to allow civil courts to intervene if a dispute continued about whether or not stolen money had been repaid to the victim.

Amy McLaughlin, of Leopold Street, Nairn appeared for sentence at Inverness Sheriff Court after previously admitting the theft of £1200 from a woman between December 24, 2018 and January 31, 2019.

Defence solicitor Rory Gowans told Sheriff Ian Cruickshank that his client had tried to repay £500 but it was refused, adding: “She has provided me with the cash today which will be forwarded by cheque by our firm.

“She says she has already paid £700 and has a bank statement to back this up.”

However, fiscal depute Victoria Silver told the court that the victim disputed that she had been repaid anything.

Sheriff Cruickshank decided to draw a line under the case immediately. He admonished McLaughlin but ordered her to pay compensation of £500, adding: “If the complainer remains aggrieved, the civil courts are open to her.”
