THE two-storey car park on Rose Street is to be turned into into one of the biggest hotels in Inverness after Highland Council unanimously approved the plans.

The proposal for a new 210-bedroom hotel at the corner of the Farraline Park bus station was welcomed by members of the south planning applications committee, who called it “a real opportunity not just for the city but for the Highlands.”

It will mean not only more accommodation in the city but will allow buses to exit Farraline Park onto Rose Street, easing congestion and pollution.

Stewart Campbell, from the developers SRP Ltd, said he was “delighted”.

“We’ve now got to finalise the design and the earliest it will be closed will be January 2020 so not until after Christmas,” he said.

“If all goes well, then we will demolish the car park decks in January and start ground work in April at the earliest. After that it will take 12 to 14 months to build and so we are aiming to open in May to June 2021.

Cllr Bill Boyd said: “I see this development as providing a real opportunity not just for the city but for the Highlands. Not only will it provide more accommodation for our visitors but this opening-up of the bus station to Rose Street gives us the opportunity to take a lot of the heavy traffic off Academy Street.”
