Rock star Liam Gallagher has added his distinctive voice to the adoration of Inverness-born Scotland hero Ryan Christie.

The former Oasis frontman and solo chart-topper, one of the most recognisable figures in British music, tweeted a message of praise about the ex-Caley Thistle attacker in the early hours of this morning.

Christie (25), the son of ICT legend Charlie, had just helped his country qualify for its first major finals in 22 years.

A video of his post-match interview then went viral, with Christie's outpouring of emotion in a tearful summing up of what it all meant winning him even more admirers.

The Celtic striker netted the opener for Scotland, but saw a 90th minute Serbian reply send the game to extra-time and then penalties.

Scotland prevailed to tee up a trio of summer Euro finals matches against Croatia and the Czech Republic at Hampden park and England at Wembley.

Mancunian Gallagher, a lifelong Manchester City fan, had clearly been taking in the live action on Sky TV and tweeted: "Ryan Christie, what a lad" to his 3.4 million followers.

The tweet was spotted by Christie's sister Paige as her family celebrated the victory together in Inverness.

Dad Charlie said: "I don't think you can overstate how huge this victory is for Scotland. I've had hundreds of texts and messages of congratulations for Ryan from far and wide.

"Ryan getting a message from Liam only underlines just how far-reaching it is."

The tweet has been 'liked' almost 25,000 times in seven hours.
