FED up motorists were left facing long tailbacks in parts of Inverness this afternoon.

The congestion came after emergency repairs to the road surface in Academy Street this morning.

Council workers were forced to carry out repairs after a pot hole or sink hole opened up on part of the road surface.

The work, which involved back-filling the hole with concrete, has since been completed Highland Council revealed that staff will have to return tomorrow morning sometime between 6am and 8am to place cold tar over the top of the concrete once it has set.

The road remained open during today's emergency repairs but the location of the hole created a bottleneck for traffic.

It is unclear how much of an impact it may have had on congestion in the city, although motorists commenting on social media have reported lengthier than normal tailbacks at locations across Inverness since the work was carried out.

The congestion comes ahead of feared traffic jams tomorrow when the Belladrum Festival gets underway.

The Black Isle Show, which holds its preview evening from 4pm today, will also be running all day on Thursday.

When the two events coincided last year it caused havoc on roads around Inverness, Beauly and Muir of Ord.
