A Courier reader who says he lived with a deposit return scheme when he was resident in Canada believes it can work very smoothly indeed.

The Courier reported last week how a number of Highland businesses are concerned that the scheme – which would see customers charged an extra 20p on the purchase of single uses drinks containers as a deposit to be returned when they bring them back for recycling – will prove too costly and is being rollled out too quickly.

Responding to our reporting online Bill Macdonald said: “We had the bottle/can return scheme in the mid 90’s when we lived in Canada.

“We just got the kids to collect all the plastic bottles in one bag and the empty cans in another. Once a month we went to a local return centre and the bags were turned out into baskets on scales and we were paid for the weight returned.”

He admitted processing items through return machines could take “a bit of time” if collections were large.

However he also added: “All very simple and a good monthly return to give the kids a treat whenever we returned them all. It was not seen as an issue over there, financially or as an unnecessary burden to return them.”
