A82 motorists face two weeks of night-time closures and lengthy detours while resurfacing work is carried out.

Bear Scotland has announced that it will be resurfacing two stretches of the busy trunk road between Fort Augustus and Invermoriston.

The works, which will take place to the south of Loch Ness Lodges and also near Allt na Criche, will get under way on Monday.

The road will be shut at those locations overnight from 9pm to 6am, with motorists instead diverted via the A887 and A87.

The work, which will not take place on Friday or Saturday nights, is expected to be finished by 6am on Monday, May 10.

Outwith the road closure times, the route will be open to traffic under a reduced 30mph speed limit – owing to the temporary nature of the road surface. Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

Commenting on the improvements, Eddie Ross, Bear Scotland’s north-west representative said: “This surfacing project next to Loch Ness will greatly improve the quality and safety of the carriageway for road users on this section of the A82.

“The overnight closures are necessary in order to protect operatives and road users given the narrow width of the A82 at this location. We’ve taken steps to limit the overall impact of the project by carrying out the work overnight and avoiding busier nights on the network.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete the project. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.”
