THE former Royal Bank of Scotland building in Inverness High Street, which has been closed for about four years, could soon have a new lease of life.

An application for planning permission to convert the ground floor of the A-listed building to a restaurant, with a two-bedroom flat on each of the two floors above, has been made by Aspin Estates Ltd through agents Blueprint Architects of Tain.

It is understood no occupier for the proposed restaurant has been selected so far.

The restaurant would be accessed via the existing door on High Street.

Each of the flats above it would be accessed via an external stair, utilising existing door openings to the rear of the building, off Market Brae Steps.

The site is within the Inverness Riverside Conservation Area.

Numbers 54-60 (evens) were built as a Post Office and two shops in the period around 1841-44, with facings produced in finely dressed stone known as ashlar.

Aspin proposes removing the bank’s internal access stair, which is not of historic significance, and separating each floor to form three individual units.

The restaurant space, if approved, would occupy the former ground floor banking hall.

The application is under consideration by Highland Council's planning department.
