Residents from four connected apartments were evacuated after fire broke out in an Inverness block of flats this afternoon.

Four fire engines, police and an ambulance crew were sent to the scene in Telford Road at just after 2pm.

Smoke was billowing through a window in a first floor property.

Witnesses said the occupants of the flat where the fire started were not in the building at the time.

Andrew Mackissack (33), who lives directly above the stricken property raised the alarm after smelling smoke.

He said: “I became aware of the smoke and went down to the flat below me.

“Listening at the door, I heard a popping and crackling sound like oil burning and I was worried it was a chip pan fire, so I called the emergency services and knocked on doors.

“Luckily, it looks like the occupants were out and all the other residents got out quickly.

“The fire brigade were fast on the scene and seem to have brought it under control.”

A police spokesman said: “We were alerted by the Scottish Fire Service to a report of a fire in Telford Street.

“We attended, but were not required. We’re not aware of any injuries resulting from the fire.”

A fire brigade spokesman said: “The fire was quickly brought under control and all persons connected to the property were accounted for.”

It is not known what caused the fire.
