Campaigning residents have managed to convince Highland Council to radically improve pedestrian safety on a busy stretch of road near Brinckman Terrace in Inverness
The chairman of the economy and infrastructure committee and local ward Councillor Ken Gowans is “delighted” that the area will now get a puffin crossing.
The campaign became quite well known when one local man would stand next to the road holding a sign with just a pelican on it – in a call for a pelican crossing.

Puffin crossings differ in that they are considered safer with pedestrian crossing detectors and pedestrian kerb detectors.
That lets the traffic lights hold the red light longer if needed for those who move slower across the road while also being more efficient.
The council confirmed that until the new puffin crossing on the B9006 is installed temporary traffic lights will be installed in the area.
The new crossing is part of the ongoing work to improve safety and encourage active travel to school in the wider Cradlehall Area which has already seen the installation of traffic calming, crossing points and junction narrowing work on both Caulfield Road and Castlehill Road and the recently completed drop kerb crossing work on the B9006 at this location.
Cllr Gowans said: “Residents in the local community have been highlighting for some time the difficulties they have had when crossing this narrow but very busy road.
“Along with the road safety team we met parents, children and local residents from both sides of the B9006 on site.
“Following the discussion and review of all the work previously undertaken I am delighted that we can announce that we will be installing the new crossing as soon as possible.
“This news will be widely welcomed by the local community and I want to thank them for championing the case for improvements.
"Although being delivered as part of the Safer Routes to School scheme for Cradlehall Primary School, this crossing will also have the wider benefit to the community of helping pedestrians access the local bus stops and residential areas.
“This is evident in the positive involvement the community have played in driving this project forward and attending site reviews and meetings so thank you to everyone involved, including our in-house Road Safety Team who will ensure the works will take place timeously.”
