The Scottish Highlands Renewable Energy Conference (SHREC) went online today as organisers Harper Macleod launched its first Virtual SHREC.

April 30 was the original scheduled date for the full conference and the Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Awards, but that has now been rearranged for later in the year.

The conference and the awards, the latter of which are organised by Highland News and Media, make up the Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Day.

David Bone, of Harper Macleod, said: "When we knew that the coronavirus outbreak would prevent us from gathering physically today for SHREC and the Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Awards at night, together with our partners at Highland News and Media, we were determined that the show would go on in some way.

"From day one of the current situation, our priority has been the health and wellbeing of all of our stakeholders – including colleagues, clients, contacts, contractors and the communities within which we work – while also ensuring that we are available to meet your requirements.

"We are grateful that our speakers agreed to take the time and effort to be part of this virtual event. The overarching theme is still climate change, and the role of the Highlands and Islands renewable energy sector in tackling it. However, the current crisis obviously factors large in all contributions."

Viewers can watch the full virtual SHREC below, which in total runs for 1 hour and 14 minutes, or watch any of the individual segments.

The other individual videos include:

  • David Bone, senior partner and head of energy & natural resources at Harper Macleod – David welcomes you to SHREC and looks at three key areas for the renewables sector.

  • Audrey MacIver, director of energy and low carbon at HIE – Audrey examines how the Highlands and Islands can be an exemplar region in the transition to zero carbon emissions.
  • Panel session: Nicky Marr in conversation with Terry Stebbings of Proterra Energy and Ryan Felber of Energy Efficiency Business Support – Nicky hosts a fascinating video conversation with Terry and Ryan, both of whom help businesses address their energy requirements.
  • Jeremy Sainsbury OBE, director at Natural Power – Jeremy offers his inimitable take on the current situation and what the future might hold for the sector, with a focus on the policy regime.

The rearranged Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Day – including the full SHREC and the Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Awards – is scheduled to take place at the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness on September 24.
