A REBEL group of six Inverness councillors look likely to force the highly contentious River Ness art project to be debated formally in public for the first time.

Councillor Ron MacWilliam has spearheaded a move against the planned artwork – a curved wall sweeping up and over the water near Bught Park – and has gained the backing of councillors Bill Boyd, Glynis Campbell-Sinclair, Emma Knox, Ken Gowans and Richard Laird.

It comes after thousands of people signed a petition calling for the artwork to be recalled, despite Highland Council insisting its approval via delegated powers was justified.

Now a special meeting must be held within 14 days to consider points put forward by Cllr MacWilliam, who previously described the ongoing saga as “the scandal of the decade”.
