SHREC – the annual Scottish Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Conference – returns on June 23.

Taking as its theme The Time is Now, SHREC provides a platform for industry leaders, operators developers and communities to come together to discuss the most pressing issues in renewable energy sector.

Held in Glasgow just six months ago, the global conference COP26 highlighted the key role renewable energy will play in efforts to reach net zero carbon emissions, and the window of opportunity for all nations worldwide.

The Highlands and Islands has proved it is a global centre of excellence for renewable energy innovation, collaboration and delivery, which SHREC will highlight.

The organisers of this year’s conference, law firm Harper Macleod alongside Highland News and Media, have taken the decision to repeat the conference virtually. Given the success of last year’s virtual event, the organisers believe they can continue to reach a wider audience and attract speakers and attendees from across the world.

The event will contain plenty of virtual networking opportunities throughout the course of the day.

David Bone, senior partner at Harper Macleod and head of the firm’s energy and natural resources team, said: “Many in-person events are returning to the calendar but we are very confident that this year’s virtual SHREC will build on the success of last year, and present more opportunities to showcase the best of the renewable energy sector in the Highlands and Islands.”

Details of speakers will follow shortly, but topics for discussion include: infrastructure developments to allow the region to become a world leader in renewable energy; skills and collaboration across the energy mix; the importance of environmental, social and governance issues; and the role of greenspaces on our wellbeing.

Mr Bone continued: “SHREC promises to bring together some of the industry’s leading thinkers, operators, policy-makers and developers.

“Having COP26 on our doorstep meant we had a front-row seat to the latest thinking and policy decisions. SHREC gives the industry the opportunity to come together, albeit virtually, to share ideas and showcase leading examples of collaboration and innovation.

“Recent events have underlined the importance of renewable energy and natural capital as part of the wider energy mix.

“We all have a role to play in achieving those targets, none more so than those delivering and working alongside world-leading renewable energy and natural capital projects.”

The evening’s awards have also been expanded to include three new categories:

Best Renewable Transaction. Open to any member of the transaction team whether the buying or selling party, professional advisers or funders.

Best Natural Capital Project. Awarded to a bio-diversity project or research programme which enhances and protects the region’s natural capital.

Best Supplier to On-Shore Renewables. Awarded to the best supplier or supporter to any form of on-shore renewables
