Rail services on the Inverness-Wick and Inverness-Kyle of Lochalsh lines are cancelled on Wednesday.

UPDATED: (08:00, Wed) BUS replacement services will operate between Dingwall and Inverness today after rail services between the Highland Capital and west and far north coasts were all cancelled.

Network Rail initially said no replacement buses would operate on the route following the announcement of cancellations, amid concerns of hazardous driving conditions.

But overnight they have revised their travel advice to say replacements will operate on the stretch between Inverness and Dingwall only. These will run as close to timetabled train departure times as possible, a Scotrail statement added.

The cancellations and limited bus replacements were announced amid yellow weather warnings for fierce gales across virtually all of Scotland and amber warnings on western coasts.

Waves up to 60 feet high are expected to batter western shores, amid warnings from the Met Office of a so-called "weather bomb".

These are an official designation to an area of rapidly deepening low pressure which sheds more than 24 millibars in pressure in 24 hours.

There will be no services between Inverness and Wick and Kyle of Lochalash on Wednesday and no bus replacements services will be provided because of "the anticipated poor road conditions".

The move means two days of rail disruption for some travellers, after services between Inverness and the central belt suffered delays and cancellations today after an electrical fault in the Pitlochry area.

Scotrail passengers with tickets dated Wednesday 10th December may travel on Thursday 11th December instead.
