A neighbourly dispute ended up in court after a 65-year-old woman began sending racist social media messages to a man living in the same street.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that Christina Mackay, of Cawdor Road, Nairn and the target of her WhatsApp messages had been neighbours for four years.

Fiscal depute Adele Gray read some of them for Sheriff Gary Aitken.

They included comments like: "English. Says it all. Go back to England. Why are you up here anyway? Scots don't want English up here.

"He reported them to the police."

Defence solicitor Duncan Henderson told the court that his client, who has a number of health issues, had been drinking and "wants to tender an apology to him".

He added: "She deeply regrets her actions and didn't realise she was capable of saying such things.

"Her drinking was out of control and she is seeking treatment."

She admitted sending offensive messages on January 4, 2024 and was fined £520.

Sheriff Aitken told her: "Whatever reasons you started drinking to excess, is no excuse. The comments were completely unacceptable and did you no credit."
