Three dedicated Highland volunteers with the animal charity, SSPCA, have been recognised for their work with a King’s Coronation Champion Award.

Sue and Ron Howie received the royal treatment at a Buckingham Palace garden party after they were awarded the honour.

The Coronation Champions Awards, with the support of the Queen Consort, celebrate and recognise inspiring volunteers who have made an exceptional difference in their communities.

Only 500 awards were given out from over 5000 nominees.

Sue and Ron attend the SSPCA Highland and Islands Rescue and Rehoming centre every Monday and Tuesday to help to look after the rabbits and walk dogs at the centre as well as fostering numerous rabbits.

Speaking about her royal experience at the palace, Sue said: "We thoroughly enjoyed our day, what a wonderful experience – but we are looking forward to seeing our baby bunnies again soon."

Inverness wildlife driver volunteer, John Moffat, was also nominated for the prestigious award and he will attend the Holyrood Garden party in July.

He has been a wildlife driver for two years and given over 220 hours of his time to help save wildlife that otherwise may not have made it.

He has helped with everything from seals to budgies, and even picked up two cats from the Stornoway ferry.

"I am absolutely gobsmacked," he said.

"I just do my little bit to help but really appreciate that you think I am worthy of this award."

Volunteer programme manager, Lesley Toles, who nominated the trio, said: "We are all so thrilled that Ron, Sue and John have been awarded King’s Coronation Awards. What an honour, and so well deserved.

"While, of course, we know that all of our volunteers are champions and the support they give us is invaluable, Ron, Sue and John really do go above and beyond.

"The care they display for the animals, the hours they put in to help our team, and their unfailing good humour and kindness is so appreciated."
