The organiser of the Royal National Mod has announced it is cancelling all provincial competitions due to take place in May and June following government advice.

The cancellation includes mods in Inverness, Golspie for the Caithness and Sutherland mod, Stirling, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Lochaber and Perth.

Only two provincial mods are still on the cards at the moment in Mull and Islay which both take place in September.

In a statement, John Morrison, chief executive of An Comunn Gaidhealach, said: "The board of director of An Comunn Gaidhealach met on Friday March 13. The subject of coronavirus was discussed at this meeting.

"The directors have asked me to write to you to state that: it is important that the guidance issued by the government be adhered to by all local/provincial mod organisers.

"The expectation of the directors, at this current time, is that the May to June round of local/provincial mods will not take place.

"At a later dare, further information and guidance concerning the autumn round of provincial mods will be distributed.

"Further information and guidance concerning the Royal National Mod will also be issued at a later date."
