A number of projects in Inverness could benefit from Scottish Government funding if councillors agree to a range of recommendations next week.

A special meeting of Highland Council’s city of Inverness committee is due to meet next Tuesday (March 8) to discuss the allocation of Place Based Investment funding for the current financial year.

The Scottish Government has allocated the council £1,963,000 for the programme and last year it was decided that the city committee be allocated a £640,433 share of the total.

Members are now being asked to agree to invest £79,000 of that funding in the ongoing Victorian Market refurbishment project.

In addition it has been recommended to invest £335,499 in the Inverness Campus Sports Development project, aiming to create new sports facilities for the east of the city.

It has also been recommended allocating funds to the following community projects, up to the total of £225,934:

• Glen Urquhart Public Hall (Glen Urquhart Rural Community Association) £45,000.

• Inshes Wheeled Sports Park (Inshes Community Association) £93,191.

• Crown Church – a community resource (Church of Scotland) £74,343.

• Ardersier Outdoor Gym (Ardersier Community Hub) £13,400.

The report said: “On November 18, 2021, the city of Inverness committee agreed in principle to investing £79,000 in the Victorian Market refurbishment project and to investing £335,499 in the Inverness Campus Sports Development project.

“Members also agreed to operate a Challenge Fund for the remaining budget.”

The challenge fund invited applications by projects that would be eligible for a share of the remaining sum.

Councillors have been told: “As is typical with this type of funding,

the proposals received by the Highland Council vary significantly in terms of project outputs and outcomes.

“Each project proposed has its own particular local benefits and impacts.”

Glen Urquhart Rural Community Association is seeking to replace the roof of the main village hall while Inshes Community Association wants to build a wheeled sports park.

Church of Scotland is seeking funds for works at Crown Church and Ardersier Community Hub wants to install outdoor gym equipment at a yet to be decided location in the village.

Place Based Investment is expected to be a continued commitment to local authorities from the Scottish Government.
