Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been discharged after spending a week in hospital suffering from coronavirus.

Concerns for Mr Johnson’s health spiked on Monday when he was placed in intensive care at St Thomas’ in London but he was taken back to a ward on Thursday after his condition improved.

He will not make an immediate return to work and instead will recuperate at Chequers, the Prime Minister’s official country residence.

A statement from Downing Street said: “The PM has been discharged from hospital to continue his recovery at Chequers.

"On the advice of his medical team, the PM will not be immediately returning to work. He wishes to thank everybody at St Thomas' for the brilliant care he has received.

"All of his thoughts are with those affected by this illness."
